THE TEXTILE DESIGNER

JANE DEANE

TEXTILE DESIGNER
Walkhampton

Jane believes in making fabrics from scratch, and even breeds her own silk worms to get exactly the quality of silk she requires. Yarns come from her own sheep, while her dyes are from indigo and other plants in her garden.

Jane says: “The magic of rearing a caterpillar, and then using the discarded cocoon to create something lovely, is a marvellous process. Similarly, to take the heavy fleece from a sheep who is glad to be rid of it and turn that into a yarn or fabric that someone can use is a real privilege.”

During her workshops, Jane will explain how she rears caterpillars to produce fine silks and extracts dyes from indigo and other plants.
