STUART GROVE

POLE-LATHE WOODTURNER AND SPOON CARVER
North Bovey, Dartmoor

Specialising in ancient woodturning techniques, some of which date from the Iron Age, Sharif uses a traditional pole lathe powered by a treadle to hew bowls, pots, cups, flasks and boxes, sourcing wood from sustainable Dartmoor forests.

“Vessels made on a pole lathe tend to have more charm and character than those on an electric lathe, and have a lovely textural, tactile quality,” he says.

The earliest British examples of woodturning, dating from the Bronze Age, were recently found on Dartmoor.
