The Dartmoor Wool Loft is rooted in Moretonhampstead’s rich wool history and celebrates the timeless craft of working with natural fibres. Based in a beautiful converted chapel, The Wool Loft hosts regular informal drop-in groups and a programme of specialist workshops throughout the year including spinning, weaving, natural dyeing, knitting and crochet. 

it also stocks beautiful and affordable British yarns with a focus on fleece, yarns and handmade items from South West producers and artisans. 

 

 


 

EXPERIENCES WITH THE WOOL LOFT


BEGINNERS’ WEAVING WORKSHOP
Six hours | £105 per person (minimum 4 people)

Learn the basics of weaving with a rigid ‘Heddle Loom’. We’ll teach you how to warp a loom and create a beautiful piece of fabric using a selection of British yarns. Depending on progress you may even be able to finish a scarf. No experience necessary. All materials and equipment provided. 

BEGINNERS’ DROP SPINDLE WORKSHOP
Three hours | £25 per person (minimum 4 people) 

Learn how to spin using a drop spindle and ply your yarn into a ball of wool using the Andean method. There will be different types of fleece for you to try, including fleece from Dartmoor. No experience necessary. All materials and equipment provided. 

BEGINNERS’ KNITTING WORKSHOP
Four hours | £30 per person (minimum 4 people) 

In this course you will learn how to cast on, cast off and do knit and purl stitches. There should also be time to learn to try a rib and change colours.  Depending on progress, you might be able to make a wrist warmer and you’ll be able to take home yarn to make the second mitten.  No experience necessary. All materials and equipment provided. 

BEGINNERS’ CROCHET WORKSHOP
Four hours | £30 per person (minimum 4 people)

Learn how to make a small sit- or chair-mat using the ancient, traditional and basic art of Peg Looming.  During this course, you’ll make a mat on the day which you can take home. This course will enable to you to carry on making mats at home.

Peg looming is a simple and rewarding craft; using your hands to stretch and tease the fleece is very therapeutic and the simplicity of this skill makes it accessible for beginners up to more experienced weavers and also for children aged eight and upwards. Children need to be accompanied and supported by an adult. No experience necessary. All materials and equipment provided.
